NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — The Atlantic 10 Conference announced Thursday the women's basketball league opponent pairings for the 2017-18 season.
Davidson, entering its fourth year in the league, will face each of the 13 conference opponents during a 16-game A-10 slate. The Wildcats will play eight home and eight away games.
The home and home series this year will see the Wildcats face Fordham, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. It marks the fourth year in a row the 'Cats will face Fordham twice. In addition, Davidson will host Dayton, Duquesne, George Washington, Saint Joseph's and VCU, while playing on the road against George Mason, La Salle, Richmond, St. Bonaventure and Saint Louis.
During the 2016-17 season, the Atlantic 10 Conference had six women's basketball teams qualify for postseason play. It was the 12th consecutive year that the A-10 has had at least five teams compete in the postseason. Top-seeded Dayton defeated seventh-seeded Duquesne in the 2017 Championship final at the Richmond Coliseum, earning the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Flyers earned their first conference title since 2012.
The 2018 A-10 Championship will feature six first-round games being played on campus sites on Tuesday, Feb. 27 before heading to Richmond, Friday, March 2 through Sunday, March 4 for the quarterfinals, semifinals and championship final games. The top two championship seeds will receive a bye, with the remainder of the field facing off in games hosted by seeds 3-8 for the first round. For the second consecutive year, the women's championship will place an increased emphasis on the regular season in a fan friendly format.
The complete 2017-18 conference schedule with dates and times will be announced at a later date.
Davidson returns eight letterwinners, including its top two scorers senior Mackenzie Latt (13.7 ppg), a former A-10 All-Rookie Team member, and junior Justine Lyon (15.7 ppg), who was named the A-10 Most Improved Player last year. Latt reached the 1,000-point career mark last year and sits in 11th place all-time with 1,143 points. Lyon tallied team highs by scoring in double figures a personal-best 20 of Davidson's 29 games and reached the 20-point mark a career-high nine times. She also reached 30 points twice, including a career-high 34-point outing at UMass, Feb. 4.
