LEXINGTON, Ky. -- The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) announced today that 822 teams, including Davidson, have earned the Team Academic Award for the 2016-17 season. The 822 teams is an all-time high as the award honors teams who have matched their dedication to volleyball with excellence in the classroom.
Additionally, Davidson was one of just 22 Division I programs to also be honored for matching their Dig Pink Fundraising goals, marking the second-straight year for such an honor. The Team Academic Award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.
Davidson is one of four teams from the Atlantic 10 to receive the Team Academic Award (George Mason, La Salle, Saint Louis), and joins George Mason in the Dig Pink honors.
Dig Pink, sponsored by the Side-Out Foundation, is a yearly event where volleyball teams across the nation work to raise funds for breast cancer research and spread awareness of the disease. Teams spend the entire month of October raising funds for the cause.
The Wildcats begin their 2017 campaign on August 26 in Wilmington, N.C., where they will face Appalachian State, Loyola (Md.), and host UNCW in a tournament.
