NORTHBROOK, Ill. – Allstate Insurance Company and the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) announced the Good Works Team® nominees Monday that included Davidson senior Ryan Samuels.
The Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® was established in 1991 to recognize a select group of college football players who have made a commitment to service and enriching the lives others.
For Davidson, this marks the fourth consecutive year a Wildcat has been nominated for this prestigious award. Nate Casey '17 was selected to the 2016 squad, while Dan Casey '15 was named to the 2014 roster. Chris Woods '16 was also nominated back in 2015.
"It is really inspiring to see Ryan recognized this way. He has earned this recognition. Our program aspires to develop ambassadors for Davidson College," said head coach Paul Nichols. "Ryan embodies the characteristics we look for in a great ambassador. I am really proud of him and look forward to coaching him this season."
Samuels, a linebacker for the 'Cats, returns as the leading tackler after making 45 total stops in 2016, 20 of them solo stops and 3.0 for loss with 2.0 sacks.
Off the field, Samuels is a Bonner Scholar and Class of 1979 Scholar at Davidson. The Bonner Scholar is a highly competitive four-year scholarship program that supports a strong team of students that work to bring about positive change through service, research and action.
Beginning in 2014, Samuels has continued to volunteer in the community as a third grade student-assistant at a local elementary school, helping to facilitate the understanding of math concepts and applications.
Just this past year he spent his spring break on a trip to Costa Rica where he helped construct and repair roads and homes for a non-governmental organization that helped the less fortunate.
The Miramar, Fla., native has volunteered with the YMCA as a youth counselor, implementing activities to promote self-worth, helped Habitat for Humanity, and served as a Freedom Schools Servant Leader Intern.
Out of the 146 nominees, 22 student-athletes will be named to the squad in all, 11 from NCAA Football Subdivision and 11 from the NCAA Championship Division, Division II, III and NAIA. The final roster will be unveiled in September.
