DAVIDSON, N.C. — First year head coach Gayle Coats Fulks announced today Davidson's non-conference schedule for women's basketball, a 13-game slate with five of those games at John M. Belk Arena.
The Wildcats are staying close to home for the 2017-18 season, as nine of their games will be played in the state of North Carolina. They will take on old rivals Western Carolina, Appalachian State and Elon from their time in the Southern Conference, while also facing Big South foes Gardner-Webb, UNC Asheville and High Point. In addition, Davidson will travel to Orlando, Fla., to take on UCF after Christmas and continue their annual cross-county battle against Charlotte.
Six of the 13 teams made a postseason appearance, with N.C. State, UNCA and Elon making the NCAA Tournament.
"I am very excited about our non-conference schedule," said Coats Fulks. "We have scheduled many regional opponents with various styles that will help prepare us for the versatility of the A-10. We will be challenged from start to finish and I am looking forward to seeing us grow and form our identity throughout this schedule."
Davidson begins the season with an exhibition at home against local Division II Johnson C. Smith from down the road in Charlotte, Nov. 3. The regular season will then tipoff seven days later with a trip to Cullowhee, N.C., to face the Catamounts of Western Carolina. It will be the start of four-game road trip and the first of seven road games overall in the first nine games to open the season. The 'Cats are riding a nine-game win streak vs. WCU and have won 12 of the last 14 meetings overall.
The next three games on the road will be at N.C. State (Nov. 12), Furman (Nov. 15) and Appalachian State (Nov. 19). The Wolfpack went 23-9 last year and reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Davidson has won the last two meetings vs. the Paladins, as both teams will be playing for the 60th time while the 'Cats will be facing ASU for the first time since Feb. 24, 2014.
The Wildcats' home opener has them facing UNC Asheville before Thanksgiving, Nov. 22. The Bulldogs went 19-15 on their way to making the NCAA Tournament last year. The two schools have not played each other since the 2007-2008 season, with the 'Cats holding a 4-3 lead all-time after scoring a 69-56 win in last meeting.
Also visiting to finish out the week will be Princeton, Nov. 25. The Tigers, who reached the Women's NIT last year, will be making their second-ever visit to Belk Arena.
A two-game road trip will follow with games at William & Mary and Mercer, Nov. 27 and Dec. 3. Both teams had strong seasons last year with records of 20-11 and 25-7, respectively, while the Mercer Bears made the WNIT. The Wildcats dropped a 67-60 decision last year to Mercer at home and have not played the Tribe since the 2010-11 season.
Davidson will play three of its next four games at home, hosting Elon (Dec. 6), Gardner-Webb (Dec. 15) and Charlotte (Dec. 21), while going on the road to take on High Point (Dec. 18). The Phoenix are coming off a 27-7 season, which included winning the CAA Championship title by knocking off James Madison to reach the NCAA Tournament for the first time. The Wildcats are riding a seven-game win streak against GWU, while they are seeking to halt a seven-game skid against cross-county rival 49ers.
Finishing out the non-conference slate of games will be a first-time trip to UCF, Dec. 28. The Knights took last year's inaugural meeting between the two schools. They went 21-12 overall and advanced to the second round of the WNIT.
