DAVIDSON, N.C. — Four former Davidson men's tennis assistant coaches under the guidance of head coach Drew Barrett have had impressive runs since moving to head coaching positions at their respective programs.
Alex Kasarov, Ricky Gonzalez, Ben Johnson and Davidson grad Billy Boykins '01 have each had great success at Monmouth, Florida Atlantic, Richmond and Queens during their time. Kasarov, who was with the Wildcats for two seasons (2014-16), recently took over as the head coach at Monmouth for the 2017 campaign and guided the Hawks to 7-0 record in league play (13-12 overall) and its second straight MAAC Championship title to reach the NCAA Tournament. He was named the league's coach of the year during his first season, while all three of the Hawks' doubles teams earned all-first team honors and five singles players were named to either the first or second-team All-MAAC.
Former assistant Ricky Gonzalez (2014-15 season) has continued to help Florida Atlantic increase its win total during his four-year tenure as head coach. This past season saw Owls go 17-7 for the third-most wins in program history. During his time, Gonzalez has helped FAU improve the number of wins in each of his seasons.
Apart of the Wildcat teams from 2007-2010, Ben Johnson left to take over the Richmond men's tennis program and guided the Spiders to their most successful season in program history in 2017. In his seventh season, Johnson was named the Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year after guiding the Spiders to a program-best 25-4 mark overall, the Atlantic 10's top seed and the first A-10 championship appearance in over 10 years. He has collected 100 wins in seven years, including the program-best 25 this past season.
Boykin, who was Barrett's first assistant when he arrived in 2006, recently took over the men's and women's tennis program's down the road at Queens University in Charlotte. This past spring with the men's team, Boykin led the Royals to an 11-0 league record and their first South Atlantic Conference regular season title in program history, while repeating as SAC Tournament Champions.
Under Boykin's leadership, the Royals finished the season 16-1 overall and undefeated against NCAA Division II competition. Prior to joining Queens, Boykin was the head coach for the Charlotte 49ers men's program starting in 2010 where he guided them to 50 wins and the first national ranking since 2002. Eleven Niners have earned all-conference honors and three 49ers earned conference all-academic team honors during his tenure.
