OMAHA, Neb. -- As Davidson baseball's historic 2017 season comes to a close, senior outfielder Will Robertson continues to collect postseason accolades. The Greenville, S.C., native was one of five Division I players named as finalists for the Gregg Olson Award, given annually to baseball's breakout player of the year.
Robertson is in elite company, joining No. 1 Oregon State's Jake Thompson, Cal State Fullerton's Brett Conine, Nick Egli from Belmont, and Ryan Flick from Tennessee Tech. The winner will be announced during the College World Series in Omaha this weekend.
After a freshman season at Auburn filled with only mixed success, Gregg Olson became one of the top collegiate players in the nation during an outstanding, unprecedented sophomore season. Despite being omitted from any preseason All American lists, Olson went on to lead the entire nation in ERA with a 1.26 mark and compiled an incredible 11-1 record with 10 saves for the Tigers.
The Olson Award has been developed to honor college baseball's success stories and showcase players like Olson who have raised the level of their game through hard work, strength of mind and determination. Eligible players will be those who are omitted from major publication's preseason All American prognostications; however by the end of the season their on the field performance will demonstrate that they are among the top amateur baseball players in the nation.
Robertson, who was recently named an All-American by both Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball, finished his Wildcat career with a 56-game reached base streak, the longest in school history. He turned in hitting streaks of 16 and 20 games each this season, and finished the year atop the team in nearly every offensive category. His 18 home runs set a new program best for a single season, where he also ranks first in school history in single season extra-base hits (39) and single-season total bases (163).
Robertson leaves Davidson as a member of the winningest class in school history, as well as an Atlantic 10 First Team and All-Academic team selection. His outstanding play helped catapult the Wildcats into a Cinderella run, where they captured the program's first title in a 115-year existence, and went on to win the Chapel Hill Regional in their first NCAA appearance.
Robertson graduated Cum Laude with a degree in Economics and will begin working for the prosperous Red Ventures company this summer as a data analyst.
