DAVIDSON, N.C. – A pair of road contests against Atlantic Coast Conference foes and 10 home dates highlight the 2017 Davidson men's soccer schedule, as announced Tuesday by head coach Matt Spear '93.
"The fall campaign will be driven by the leadership, conviction and team-first mentality of our eight seniors," said Coach Spear, who is entering his 16th season at the helm of his alma mater. "We have some very talented young players too, that elevated their level of play and impact in this past spring's unbeaten run of exhibition matches."
Following three preseason contests, including two at Alumni Stadium (Campbell – 8/19, Queens 8/22), Davidson will open the 2017 slate with five of its first six contests on 1992 Team Field, beginning with Presbyterian on Aug. 26 at 6 p.m.
"Facing a friend in former assistant and Presby head coach Jonathan Potter on opening night will be fun – but he and I of course know it's all about the players and the team performances."
The opener will be the first of five straight against Big South Conference members (Radford – 9/1, at UNCA – 9/6, Winthrop – 9/9, High Point – 9/12) to start the season.
The Wildcats will conclude their homestand on Sept. 15 against former Southern Conference rival Wofford, before consecutive road contests at Virginia Tech (9/19) and Virginia (9/25) six days a part.
In 2014, when Davidson posted a 10-2-6 record (fewest losses in the country), it played the Hokies to a draw in Blacksburg and knocked off eventual National Champion Virginia, 2-1, at Klockner Stadium.
"Taking on ACC teams on the road is a staple of our program's intent to embrace challenge and to stretch out of our comfort zones."
The Wildcats will conclude the month of September with their A-10 opener versus Dayton (9/30), the beginning of a stretch that includes eight of the last nine against league competition.
A date with Elon (Oct. 24) will be the only non-conference tilt during October.
Davidson's meeting with the Flyers will include soccer alumni events to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the 1992 Final Four Team.
On Nov. 1 the Wildcats will close out the regular season with a "Senior Night" contest against La Salle.
The 2017 Atlantic 10 Men's Soccer Tournament will begin Nov. 4 & 5 with the higher seeds hosting quarterfinal match-ups, before Dayton hosts the semis and finals the following weekend.
"The focus for the guys is to put in the full effort this summer so we can hit the ground running in August. A good start to the season is the ideal path towards conference play and postseason aspirations. The ultimate goal is an A-10 Championship. Our foundation will be on Family, Striving Together, and Excellence."
