NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — For the third consecutive year, the Davidson women's tennis team had three players earn Atlantic 10 honors as the league announced its all-conference and academic teams Thursday.
For the third year in a row, Anna Catharine Feaster was named to the first team, while sophomore Megan Scholvinck and freshman Alexandra Abele were each named to the second team.
The trio helped the Wildcats to another solid season with a 15-6 record, giving them 45 victories in the past three years. They reached the quarterfinals of the Atlantic 10 Championship before falling to Saint Louis. Six Wildcats, including Feaster, Scholvinck and Abele, reached the double-digit mark in singles wins this season, the most since the 2010 campaign.
Now a three-time A-10 All-First Team pick, Feaster was Davidson's No. 1 singles player this season. The junior from Knoxville, Tenn., had 13-6 records in both singles and doubles, going a combined 10-4 against A-10 foes in both. Feaster finished with an 11-5 record at the top singles spot and closed out the season on a strong note, going 4-1 in her last five matches.
She was named the A-10 Player of Week, Feb. 14, to give six career weekly awards. With the 13 singles wins, Feaster now has a career singles mark of 43-18, while adding a 44-17 record in doubles with partner Ally Sexton.
Scholvinck earned her first all-conference honor after going a personal-best 12-7 in singles action, including 6-1 in league play, at No. 2 and then teaming with Samantha Armas at No. 1 doubles to go 12-6. The sophomore had career-high winning streaks of four and five, respectively, in singles and doubles.
The Mill Valley, Calif., native was tabbed the league's player of the week, March 21, her second career weekly honor.
One of the top freshmen in the A-10 was Abele and she was also one of the 'Cats' top duel players. The Cincinnati, Ohio, native registered a team-best 16-4 singles mark at No. 4 and 5, getting 14 of those wins at No. 4, while adding a 16-4 record with partner Ava Todd at No. 3 doubles.
Five times Abele was picked the league's rookie of the week, the most since the Wildcats have joined the A-10. She rattled off an eight-match singles winning streak from Feb. 5-March 12. Abele and Todd had an even more impressive mark in doubles, opening the year on an 11-match win streak to tie the longest streak dating back to 1996.
VCU sophomore Janina Braun and Massachusetts freshman Janja Kovacevic were named the Atlantic 10 Conference Women's Tennis Most Outstanding Performer and Rookie Performer, respectively, which was announced following a vote by the league's 14 head coaches. In the same vote, Massachusetts' Judy Dixon was named Coach of the Year.
