FAIRFAX, Va. – The Davidson women's track and field team added 10 new personal bests to an already stellar spring campaign Saturday at the Mason Spring Invitational.
The 'Cats posted four new PR's in the 5,000-meter run alone, led by sophomore Caroline Yarbrough's time of 16:53.52. The Greensboro, N.C., native broke 17 minutes for the first time and was the second collegian finisher overall. Joining Yarbrough was junior Laurel Sheffield (17:11.22), senior Hayden Bates (17:21.78) and classmate Caroline Turner (17:57.29).
Davidson had similar success in the 1500-meter run as the squad added three PR's to the long list of the 2017 season. Junior Sarah Sears improved her time, dropping it down to 4:28.5. Sophia Mills (4:35.72) and Susannah Cate (4:44.49) and Emma Pettit (5:10.38) also bettered their previous marks.
Freshman Carly Peters used all six attempts given to her in the javelin. The Atlantic 10 Women's Rookie Performer of the Week marked a throw of 43.09-meters (142-4'), on her final toss of the day, good for second overall.
Senior Hannah Rieden nearly snapped her own program record in the 800-meter run, placing fifth overall, the fourth best collegian, in 2:10.09. Rieden clocked in at 2:10.07 last season at the Atlantic 10 Championship. Sophomore Claire Nieusma was the first finisher in her heat and the 20th collegiate runner to finish with a time of 2:15.66, a new personal best, adding to the long list of Wildcats to improve this season. The Oakton, Va., native has competed in three 800's this season, improving each time.
The 4x100-meter relay team of Katie Hines, Tori Long, Jennifer Thompson and Jada Woods took second in their heat and eighth overall with a time of 49.32 seconds.
Long won her heat of the 400-meter run, stopping the clock in 58.49 seconds, good for 20th place overall, while Hines tied her personal best mark in the 100-meter dash (12.58 seconds).
