PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Peyton Aldridge set a new building record with 33 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for his 12th career double-double to lead Davidson past La Salle, 82-73, in the second round of the 2017 Atlantic 10 Men's Basketball Championship, Thursday at PPG Paints Arena.
The Wildcats advance to face top-seeded Dayton in Friday's quarterfinals at 12 p.m.
Aldridge, a second-team all-conference selection, finished 10-of-15 from the floor and converted 10-of-11 free throws en route to his fourth 30-point outing of the season.
Jack Gibbs added 18 points, while backcourt mate Jon Axel Gudmundsson tied his season-high with 16 points to go along with 7 assists.
Davidson (16-14), which has eliminated the Explorers from A-10 Tournament play three years in a row, pushed its lead to as many as 19 on separate occasions early in the second half. La Salle responded with a 21-5 streak to get within a possession, but was unable to inch closer as the 'Cats stretched the margin back to 10 with just over a minute to play.
Jordan Price paced three Explorers in double figures with 20 points, B.J. Johnson had 19 and Pookie Powell scored 16.
The Wildcats, who tied the venue record for assists with 23, shot 51.9 percent (27-52) overall, including 11 3-pointers, and made 17-of-20 free throws.
La Salle (15-15) shot 50 percent but finished just 9-of-17 at the charity stripe.
After the Explorers used a 14-2 spurt to erase a 10-point deficit and grab a 25-23 lead, Davidson closed the first half on a 26-9 spurt, highlighted by four Gudmundsson treys, to head into the half up, 49-34.
In addition to shooting 61.3 percent in the opening period, Aldridge (15), Gudmundsson (12) and Gibbs (11) hit double digits prior to intermission.
