DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson volleyball head coach Chris Willis has announced his 2021 recruiting class and will welcome three incoming freshmen for the 2017 season.
Joining the 'Cats, who are coming off a historic season where they earned a postseason berth in the Atlantic 10 Tournament for the first time in school history, will be setter Sydney Champaigne, outside/opposite Remi Lehnertz, and middle blocker Ellie Crosley.
"Our recruiting class is a great mix of players who will impact the team immediately and all of them have great long-term potential. These three women are also outstanding in the classroom and overall wonderful people," Willis said.
SYDNEY CHAMPAIGNE
Setter | 5'11 | Greenwood, S.C. | Greenwood High School
A four-year letterwinner at Greenwood High School, Champaigne led her club team, the Upward Stars (Spartanburg, S.C., based) to a 2015 AAU National Championship and a 2016 third-place title. She served as the team captain during her final season, where she was selected to the North-South All-Star team and was a two-time All-Region honoree. Sydney is also a three-time AAU Volleyball Academic All-American.
Willis on Champaigne: "Sydney is a setter that is ready to play right away. She does a great job putting her hitters in a position to be successful. Our offense will definitely benefit from Sydney being on the court."
ELLIE CROSLEY
Middle Blocker | 5'11 | Austin, Texas | James Bowie High School
A two-year captain and four-year letterwinner at James Bowie High School, Crosley led the Bulldogs to a district and area championship during her senior season. She was selected as the Team MVP during her junior season, won the Offensive MVP award in both 2014 and 2016, and earned three All-District accolades. Crosley was named to the Academic All-State team in 2015 and Academic All-District from 2013-2015.
Willis on Crosley: "Ellie stood out to us from the first day we saw her. She has tremendous quickness and the ability to really close a block. Our program will benefit from her athleticism and talents right away."
REMI LEHNERTZ
Outside/Opposite | 5'10 | Santa Ana, Calif. | Foothill High School
Lehnertz has been a captain for three years at Foothill, where she led the Knights to a league title as they qualified for the CIF Section Semifinals and the California State Tournament. She is a three-year scholar athlete and earned all-league honorable mention honors.
Willis on Lehnertz: "Remi is our 'diamond in the rough' this season. Her athleticism and work ethic gives her tremendous potential on the court. She'll fit into our system as a great blocker and adds ball control to the team as well."
