CHARLESTON, S.C. – Freshman Conor Fenn placed fourth overall in the 174-pound weight class, highlighting the 2017 Southern Conference Wrestling Championship for Davidson Saturday at McAlister Field House on the campus of The Citadel.
After falling in the championship opening round by way of pin, Fenn faced an uphill battle in the consolation bracket. Returning first in the quarterfinal round, Fenn looked down and out, trailing 6-2 with little offense to speak of, but the rookie held on and gutted his way to a 10-all tie heading into the final frame. It took the Cumming, Ga., native 78 seconds in the final period to roll up Martin Duane of The Citadel and pick up his team-leading fifth fall of the season in 6:18.
Fenn battled in the consolation semifinal, holding on for a come-from-behind decision, 9-8. Fenn pulled off an escape in the third period to stop riding time at 57 seconds. Still down 8-7, the rookie pulled off a takedown and held on to advance to the third place match.
In the third round bout, Fenn once again faced Sean Mappes of Chattanooga, who pinned him in the opening round. Mappes quickly took care of business with a 19-0, first period technical fall. He finishes he rookie season 9-15 overall and winner of three of his last five bouts
After a slow start, sophomore Aidan Conroy got the 'Cats on the board with a gutsy decision victory over Roman Bolden of Chattanooga. The Ardsley, N.Y., native held on for a 3-2 win and got momentum going for his squad,
Shortly after, junior Konner Pritchard took to the mats, making light work of his opponent from The Citadel and earning his fourth win in six matches, a 14-3 major. Pritchard battled in the semis, but dropped a 6-0 decision. The 184-pounder finished the season 11-14 overall.
Freshman Hunter Costa went the distance at 141-pounds against Campbell's top-seeded, Josh Heil. The Danvers, Mass., native held a slim 2-1 advantage after the first period, but ultimately fell, 8-3, in a thrilling opening conference match for the rookie.
Davidson featured nine underclassmen as all competing grapplers return to campus next season.
