DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson women's basketball team concluded the 2016-17 year by wrapping up the season with their annual end of the year banquet recently.
The Wildcats honored their three seniors Rachel Piles, Melanie Ransom and Kayla Seymour with senior awards as well as giving the trio the Culture Award. The team MVP Award was given to Justine Lyon, while Mackenzie Latt earned the Wildcat Award and Latt along with Seymour were handed the Captain Award.
Pacing Davidson this year was the duo Lyon and Latt. A shooting guard, Lyon had a breakout second year capped off by being named the Atlantic 10 Women's Basketball Most Improved Player. The Durham, N.C., native paced the team with a 15.7 points per game average which was an increase of 10 points per game from her freshman season. She was even better in A-10 games, averaging 19.5, as both her season average and league average ranked third overall in the conference.
In addition, the sophomore averaged just under five rebounds a game, dished out 44 assists (third-best on team) and tied Latt for team high honors with 48 steals.
Lyon scored in double figures a personal-best 20 of Davidson's 29 games and reached the 20-point mark a career-high nine times, which was the most in a single season since Laura Murray had 16 during the 2013-14 season. In addition, the second-year guard reached 30 points twice, including a career-high 34-point outing at UMass, Feb. 4. She was one point away from tying the single game record, as she became the first player dating back to 1992-93 to register two 30-point games in a season.
The sophomore turned it up the final 10 games of the season, averaging 21.1 points and shooting 46.7 percent. She recorded six 20-point games during the stretch and paced the Wildcats in scoring in nine of those 10 games.
After ending the season with 13 points at Fordham in the first round of the A-10 Tournament, Lyon finished with 456 points on the season to place ninth in Davidson's single-season record book. Her 175 made field goals ranked seventh and her 126 free throw attempts were fourth-most in a single season.
Latt had another strong year in her third season with averages of 13.7 points and a team-best 7.4 rebounds per game. It was a memorable junior campaign as the Kalamazoo, Mich., native became the latest Wildcat to reach 1,000 points, Jan. 7, at Duquesne. Latt was the 19th player in program history to hit the special mark after she nailed a long jumper in the second quarter for her 1,000th and 1,001st career points. She went on to finish with 18 points, while adding 11 rebounds.
The double-double was one of her six she had on the year, pushing her career total to 19. The forward hit the double-digit mark in points 19 times overall and has 64 for her three-year career so far. Of those 19, five of them were 20-point outings, including a career-high 28 points on a personal-best 12-for-20 shooting and pulling down a season-best 14 rebounds to go with a block and three steals in 40 minutes of action at Charlotte, Dec. 21.
A former A-10 All-Freshman Team pick in 2014-15, Latt already ranks in the Wildcat top-15 in career scoring average (8th, 13.1), blocks (9th, 78), field goals made (8th, 497) and attempted (9th, 1,103), and rebounds (9th, 638).
The senior trio capped their careers off with solid seasons. Piles started a career-high 25 games, while also setting personal bests in rebounds (114), assists (23) and blocks (24, second on team). Ransom set career highs in every offensive and defensive category, while playing in all 29 of Davidson's game. After transferring from University of Maryland, Baltimore County, Seymour closed out her career by playing in 113 games and starting 51 of them, including 15 this season. The Raleigh, N.C., native was second on the team with 54 assists and dished out 175 for her career.
Seymour was selected to the 2017 'So You Want To Be A Coach' class, put on by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association. All 61 members of the class will participate in the three-day workshop held March 29-31 in conjunction with the WBCA Convention in Dallas.
Davidson (6-23, 4-12 A-10) played its third year in the Atlantic 10 as the Wildcats' season ended this year in the first round of the league tournament with a defeat at Fordham.
