DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson head coach Paul Nichols has announced the hiring of three new staffers and handed out two promotions for the 2017 season.
Joining the Wildcat family are Tim Zetts as co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, Laymarr Marshall as running backs coach, and returning to his alma mater, Jeff McDaniels '14, will serve as cornerbacks coach.
Matt Applebaum and Phil Trautwein were promoted to offensive coordinator and special team coordinator, respectively. Applebaum will continue his work with the offensive line and Trautwein the tight ends.
Zetts brings experience from all four levels of NCAA Football. A graduate of the University of Akron in Business and Organization Communications, Zetts most recently spent two seasons as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach of John Carroll University and took over as interim head coach last season. He also spent time as recruiting coordinator and running backs coach at fellow FCS school Fordham, assistant offensive line coach at Division II Indiana University of Pennsylvania and offensive quality control at California University of Pennsylvania.
Marshall joins the Wildcats after spending the last 11 years at Mt. Tabor High School. Marshall served on the staff at Mt. Tabor for 15 years, starting as an assistant from 2000-04, and returning in 2006 as offensive coordinator. He took over the program in 2008 where he held the head coaching responsibilities since. Marshall had a decorated career at Mt. Tabor, sending 67 student-athletes on to college football, 71 All-Conference team members and seven Conference Players of the Year. In his playing days at Duke, Marshall played in the 1995 Hall of Fame Bowl Game and was an All-Academic ACC team selection in the same season.
McDaniels returns to his alma mater after a four-year varsity career as a punter and wide receiver for the 'Cats from 2010-13. McDaniels jumped right into coaching in his final semester on campus as an offensive student-assistant coach. He most recently served as a graduate assistant coach working with the special teams and offensive skill players at Texas State and was previously offensive quality control coach at Old Dominion.
