GENEVA, Ohio – A first-place finish and a new school record highlighted the opening day of action for the Davidson swimming and diving teams at the Atlantic 10 Championships at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
The women set a new school record in the 200 medley relay, where the quartet of sophomore Anabelle Durham, senior Katy Williams, freshman Olivia Stanley, and senior Erica Clancy sprinted their way to a bronze medal with a time of 1:42.32. The group started mid-pack, and then Clancy pulled through an impressive last leg, moving the squad to the podium.
The old record was set at last year's A-10s, where Durham, Williams, alum Emma Tobey, and current senior Kassie Shannon registered a time of 1:42.81.
The Wildcats took gold and reigned superior in the women's 800 free relay, where they currently hold the meet, facility, and conference record. The crew of senior Elise Lankiewicz, sophomore Maggie Farrell, Shannon, and freshman Frances Resweber recorded a clip of 7:18.31, marking the third straight year the 'Cats have won the event.
The men's team swam a fantastic race in the 800 free relay, and would have finished with a silver medal but were disqualified for a false start on their final exchange.
The men did pick up points, however, in the 200 medley relay, where the band of senior Chris Cardwell, junior Taylor Willenbring, freshman Alex Strasser, and junior Ari Snyder rounded out the top eight.
Competition resumes at 10 a.m. Thursday, with preliminaries in the men's and women's 500 freestyle events. The finals will be held in Session 3, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Fans can follow the MeetMobile app, or the live results/video links provided at Championship Central (link above).
