NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — For the first time this season, Davidson swept the Atlantic 10 women's tennis weekly awards as Anna Catharine Feaster was named the Player of the Week, while Alexandra Abele grabbed her second Rookie of the Week honor, as announced today by the league office.
The two weekly honors gives Davidson four as a team, with Feaster earning the 'Cats' first player of the week this season. For the junior, it is her third career player of the week honor and sixth award overall after earning rookie of the week three times in 2015 as a freshman.
Abele was named A-10 Rookie of the Week, Jan. 31, joining Samantha Armas who earned the award, Jan. 24.
The duo helped the Wildcats tally their 12th straight victory at home dating back to last season with a 5-2 win over East Carolina over the weekend. Feaster and Abele went a combined 4-0 in singles and doubles.
A native of Knxoville, Tenn., Feaster teamed with Ally Sexton at No. 2 doubles to blank its ECU opponent, 6-0, in winning their second in a row and improving to 4-2 on the season. The junior then recorded her second straight singles victory in thrilling fashion by needing a tie-breaker to finish off a comeback of 5-7, 7-5, 7-6 at No. 2. She moved her record to 4-2 in singles.
Abele teamed with Ava Todd at No. 3 doubles and the two won their sixth consecutive match to open the season, also blanking their Pirate opponent 6-0. The Cincinnati, Ohio, native, then won her team-leading fifth singles match when she scored a 7-5, 6-1 decision at No. 4.
Davidson travels to Elon Saturday, Feb. 18, for a 12 p.m. non-conference match.
