BLACKSBURG, Va. — The Davidson women's lacrosse team got their 2017 season underway Saturday on the road, but saw host Virginia Tech use a 6-0 run to break up a one-goal game and eventually took a 13-7 decision in both team's season opener at Indoor Practice Stadium.
The Wildcats were within 4-3 after freshman Genna Portner scored her first collegiate goal off a pass from Sophia Sgroi with 3:47 on the clock in the first half. Then the Hokies answered nearly 30 seconds later and added one more before the half ended before tallying four straight goals to open the second half for a 10-3 lead.
Finishing the run off was Virginia Tech's Tristan McGinley with a pair of goals as she led all scorers on the afternoon with five goals. Taylor Caskey, Zan Biedenharn and Kristine Loscalzo scored twice each, while Biedenharn had three assists for five points.
Portner went on to score one more time for a two-goal game and senior Annie Brockett matched her with a couple scores as well. Sgroi added a goal to go with her assist, while Nicole Pettiglio and Shayne Antolini scored one goal each.
Davidson closed the game out strong with three straight scores in the final 5:15, with Brockett, Portner and Pettiglio recording goals.
