Mercer Uses Big Third Quarter to Earn Win Over Davidson

MACON, Ga. — Mercer scored 13 of the first 19 points in the third quarter to break open a close game and Davidson was unable to recover as it fell 69-54 to the Bears on the road Sunday afternoon inside Hawkins Arena in women's basketball.
The Wildcats (3-5) led 33-32 coming out of the break, but Mercer would go onto win the third quarter 23-13 to take a 55-46 lead. The 'Cats would fall behind by as many as 17 points in the fourth quarter in dropping its third straight game.
Justine Lyon led Davidson in scoring for the fifth time this year, finishing with a season-high tying 19 points on 8-of-15 shooting and three free throws.
Mackenzie Latt drained 6-of-10 shots and hit both free throws for 14 points, while sophomore Ally Welling scored a season-high 10 points and matched Latt with six rebounds.
Mercer (6-2) had three score in double figures, led by KeKe Calloway's 19 points. Kahlia Lawrence had 18 points and Amanda Thompson recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
The Bears finished the game shooting 42 percent to the Wildcats' 37 percent and both teams hit 10 free throws. Mercer held a slight edge on the glass at 41-39, while scoring four more points in the paint than the 'Cats, 36-32.
Welling helped the Wildcats double up Mercer to start the game (12-6) with eight quick points, but the 'Cats were held scoreless the rest of the quarter and would trail 14-12 at the end of the first 10 minutes.
Lyon got Davidson's offense back in rhythm in the second quarter, scoring seven of its first nine points to start for a 21-19 lead. She went on to finish the quarter with 11 and Davidson, which led by as many as seven in the quarter, took a 33-32 lead into halftime.
Davidson returns home to face Elon on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
GAME NOTES: This was the fifth meeting all-time dating back to 1996-97 season between both teams … Mercer has won the last three meetings in a row for a 3-2 lead … both teams met last year at Davidson … Justine Lyon has scored in double figures in 28 of her the last 31 games overall dating back to last season … Mackenzie Latt needs one steal to move into 10th all-time, while she moved into to 6th all-time in made field goals with her first bucket of the game … this was Davidson's third game against a Southern Conference opponent this year … Katie Turner dished out a team season-high six assists.
