DAVIDSON, N.C.  —  Despite a season-high 27 points and 11 rebounds from Mackenzie Latt, Davidson suffered a 70-65 setback to Gardner-Webb in an Education Day women's basketball contest Friday morning inside John M. Belk Arena.

Latt finished a career-best 13-of-24 from the floor, while adding tree assists, three blocks and two steals in 37 minutes of action. The double-double was her second of the season and 21st of her career.

The Wildcats' Justine Lyon also contributed a double-double, the first of her career, recording 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Tierra Huntsman paced four Gardner-Webb players in double figures with 23 points, including an 11-of-15 effort from the charity stripe. She was 9-for-13 in the fourth quarter alone.

Alexus Hill (12), Savannah Plentovich (10) and Ky'Asia Stanford (10) also went over the 10-point plateau.

As a team, the Runnin' Bulldogs went 19-of-25 at the line, while Davidson (3-7) attempted just eight, making six.

Despite trailing by 17 in the third quarter, Davidson chipped away to get within five after a Katie Turner trey and a Latt put-back in consecutive trips made it 55-50. Gardner-Webb though responded with a run to push its lead to 63-52 with 56 seconds remaining.

The 'Cats would not go quietly as they eventually got to within 68-65 on a Lyon triple with five ticks remaining, but ran out of time as the Bulldogs iced the win with two free throws for the final score.

Tied 8-8, Gardner-Webb (7-2) scored the final six points of the first period, sparking an 18-6 run to go up, 26-14, with 4:23 left in the half.

The Runnin' Bulldogs, who led 32-20 at intermission, went 9-of-14 (.643) from the floor in the second quarter and shot 50 percent in the half, while holding Davidson to just 32.3 percent in the first 20 minutes.

Trailing 41-26 with 3:25 to play in the third, the Wildcats closed the quarter on a 10-2 spurt, to cut the deficit to 43-36.

Gardner-Webb shot 48 percent overall to just a 37 percent clip for the Wildcats, who did a nice job on the glass by outrebounding the Bulldogs, 43-32. Davidson also dished out a season-high tying 15 assists and pocketed 11 steals.

Davidson takes the weekend off before heading on the road to face High Point next Monday, Dec. 18.

GAME NOTES: This was the 15th meeting all-time dating back to the 1978-79 season between both teams … Davidson's seven-game win streak in the series was snapped … both teams last met during the 2014-15 season … Justine Lyon has scored in double figures in 30 of her the last 33 games overall dating back to last season… Mackenzie Latt moved into 9th all-time in points (1,272) … Latt's 27 points today were one off her career best … her 20-pointing was the first of the season and 11th of her career ... the last time Davidson had a pair of double-doubles in a game was two years ago at Dayton (1/31/16) when Latt and Dakota Dukes each had 13 points and 10 rebounds.
