PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – A triple double from junior Mason Rooney and four Wildcats with double-digit kills wasn't enough for Davidson volleyball, who dropped its second straight five-setter Sunday, falling to La Salle by scores of 25-23, 17-25, 25-23, 20-25, 13-15.
Davidson and La Salle have now played five-set matches in their last four head-to-head contests.
Rooney registered 14 kills, dished out 34 assists, and added 11 digs for her fifth triple double of the year, a category she ranks second in the country in. The 34 helpers were also a career-best.
Classmates Ciera Cockrell and Katharine Franz also tallied double-digit slams, with 14 and 13 respectively. Freshman- and former A-10 Rookie of the Week- Ellie Crosley added 12 kills and achieved a new personal best with nine blocks. Senior Kylie Bishopp also recorded a career-best, tallying 17 digs.
"Our offense was a highlight for the match," head coach Chris Willis said. "We hit at a high percentage and took aggressive swings. We broke down in the serve and pass portion of the game and didn't control the ball well enough to win. There were some bright spots from individuals that we'll continue to build on.
Arriving at a 20-20 tie in the opening stanza, two timely kills from Franz, aided by a kill from senior Mary Harriet Moore and Cockrell, allowed the 'Cats to pull head and take the first frame 25-23.
The high-intensity offense faltered slightly in Game 2, as Davidson fell behind by as many as 10 points and despite a 5-0 rally late in the frame, dropped the set 17-25.
The third game was a back-and-forth affair, with the teams reaching a tie as late as 23-23. After a Davidson timeout, Cockrell fired back with a kill and the 'Cats took advantage of a La Salle miscue to take the set 25-23 and a 2-1 lead in the match.
After the Explorers forced a fifth set with a 20-25 victory in Game 4, the finale was a true battle, with 10 tied scores.
After a kill by Franz made the register even at 13-13, La Salle stole the match, capitalizing on a Davidson error for the final point of the contest.
The Wildcats wrap up their 2017 season next weekend, traveling to Richmond, Va., to face league-leaders VCU, who remain unbeaten in conference action.
