DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson baseball concluded its final week of the fall season with the final Red and Black World Series. The Black squad took the title, after winning two-of-three games the first weekend and two-of-three this past weekend.
In the first contest, Red was victorious 8-6, after a game-winning single by sophomore transfer Walker Imwalle in the shortened seven-inning affair. Imwalle went 2-for-4 in the game with two RBI, and was aided by junior Max Bazin's 2-for-5 day where he swiped three stolen bases, and redshirt sophomore Ward Coleman, who cranked out two doubles and drove in three.
For the black team, junior Justin Lebek led the offense, going 2-for-3 with a homer and scoring twice. Sophomore Brett Centracchio also homered, and classmate Alex Fedje-Johnson went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
The Black team nearly pulled off a no-hitter in Game 2, falling one out shy but still winning 9-1. Starter Josh Smutzer hurled five and a third, striking out six for the win. The no-no was broken up by Red team redshirt sophomore Greg Lowe with a line drive single.
With the final series split 1-1, Black prevailed for the crown after a close 4-3 victory. They scored three times in the fifth to take the lead, relying on the starting pitching of sophomore southpaw Jaret LaCagnina, who went five and two thirds innings with seven strikeouts and just a pair of hits. The trio of Andrew Ashur, ZJ Zabinski, and Austin Leonard combined for three and third scoreless frames of relief. Leonard picked up his second save of the series after getting Coleman to pop out with two on in the ninth.
Offensively, Black was led by senior Alec Acosta (2-3, walk), Lebek (1-2, walk, hit-by-pitch, two stolen bases), and Fedje-Johnson (2-4). Imwalle blasted another long ball for the red squad, this one a three-run shot.
Davidson baseball will begin its 2018 campaign in mid-February at Wilson Field.
