MOREHEAD, Ky. –
A late potential game-tying drive came up just short as Davidson fell in the season finale at Morehead State in Pioneer Football League action Saturday at Jayne Stadium action, 21-14.

With the loss Davidson ends 2-9 overall and 0-8 in the PFL, while with the win Morehead State improves to 4-7 and 3-5 in league action.

Down a touchdown late in the fourth, senior Brendan Simpkins broke through the Eagle offensive line and sacked MSU quarterback Lawson Page to force a turnover on downs with 2:18 remaining in the game.

Davidson flew down the field and got as close as the Eagle 27-yard line, but an interception with under minute to play ended the threat and the season for the 'Cats.

The Wildcats put themselves in position to get the late win early in the second half after a stagnant opening 30 minutes.

Davidson, who won the toss and deferred the opening kick, quickly marched the down the field on the opening drive of the second half on a 7-play, 75-yard scoring drive capped off by an 11-yard Stockton McGuire scoring scamper to knot the game at 7-7.

On the ensuing Eagles possession, Wildcat defensive lineman Clay Robinson pounced on a loose ball that was dropped in a quarterback to running back exchange and set up Davidson on the Eagle 26-yard line. Dugger punched it from 19 yards out, his eighth of the season, to give the Wildcats the lead early in the half, 14-7.

Morehead State quickly responded with a 3-play, 60-yard drive and added the go-ahead score late in the third to make it 21-14 after three, the eventual final score.

Dugger finished with 111 yards on 23 carries, his fifth 100-yard performance of the season. His 1,131 rushing yards is the second best single-season total in program history, behind only Davidson Hall of Fame inductee, Ray Sinclair's 1,339-yard campaign in 1980.

Another milestone was reached against the Eagles as junior defensive end Boo Jordan registered two sacks to move into 10th all-time with 14.

Phelps finished the game 17-for-40 for 173 yards and two interceptions. Sophomore linebacker Tony Collins paced the defensive effort with a career day, registering 11 tackles, 0.5 for loss and got a rush on the quarterback. Classmate Bryce Perry-Martin made 9 stops, three solo and 1.5 for loss.

MSU narrowly outgained the 'Cats on the day (329-325) with Davidson recording 17 first downs to the Eagles 16.
