GREENVILLE, S.C. — Despite getting season-high games from freshmen Katie Turner and Sarah Donovan, Davidson fell short on the road at Furman, 65-62, Wednesday evening inside Timmons Arena in women's basketball action.
Davidson (1-2) had one last chance to try and tie the game, but Justine Lyon's three-ball attempt was blocked as the final horn sounded. Mackenzie Latt had made it 64-62 with an off-balance layup and then Furman hit 1-of-2 free throws on its next possession before the Wildcats had their last chance.
Turner did her best to try and lead the Wildcats to victory, dropping in a team season-high 23 points on 8-of-17 shooting that included 6-from-12 from three-land. The freshman guard dropped in 12 points, all on three-balls, in the third quarter.
Fellow classmate Donovan came off the bench for 15 points, swishing home all seven free throws and hauled in a season-best nine boards. Latt had a season-high 13 rebounds, seven on offense, while filling the box score with seven points, four assists, three blocks and a steal.
The Paladins had two reach double figures in points, led by Cierra Carter's 16. DeAnneisha Jackson chipped in 10 points.
With under eight minutes left in the game, the Wildcats (1-2) were leading 57-52 after Donovan connected on her second three-point play of the game. The Paladins answered by going on a 13-4 run the rest of the way to steal the win.
The Wildcats raced out to a 6-0 lead behind a full-court press to start the game. The first quarter then went back-and-forth until Sarah Donovan converted on an and-one play to put the 'Cats up 20-19 to close the quarter.
Both teams struggled in the next quarter, with Davidson missing 10 shots in a row during one stretch, but it kept pushing and ended the second quarter on an 8-2 run. It was highlighted by a running jumper in the lane by Lyon to give the Wildcats a 33-27 edge at the half.
Furman shot 40.7 percent for the game compared to Davidson's 33.3 percent. The game featured 11 lead changes and four ties.
Davidson wraps up a four-game road trip to start the year by play at Appalachian State Sunday for a 2 p.m.
