NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Davidson women's cross country team added to their impressive 2017 season as senior's Sarah Sears and Laurel Sheffield were named to the Atlantic 10 Academic All-Conference team, announced by the league Tuesday.
Sears led the team from start to finish, claiming second at the A-10 Championship and helping pace her team to a third place result. A Latin-American Studies major from Arlington, Va., Sears earned All-Conference accolades for her high A-10 finish and ended her collegiate cross country career with a 29th place result at the NCAA Southeast Regional Championship. She was a two-time A-10 Performer of the Week this season.
Sheffield earned an All-Conference spot for her 12th place finish at the A-10 Champs. A Psychology major from Lexington, Va., Sheffield set a new career 5k mark at the Queen City Invite, stopping the clock in 17:45.0, the fifth fastest time of the day.
"Sarah and Laurel continue to remind us that we can achieve excellence in the classroom and on the field," said Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Jen Straub. "Our mission as a program is to continue to recruit athletes that value the love of learning as well as excelling their sport.
Sears and Sheffield join four other A-10 student-athletes on the exclusive six-member Academic All-Conference team. To be eligible, students must have a GPA higher than 3.0 for their entire academic career and are voted on by the league's Sports Information Directors.
