DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson women's basketball team tips off their 2017-18 season with a warmup exhibition game Friday night against Johnson C. Smith from just down the road in Charlotte.
The Wildcats will host the Golden Bulls for a 5 p.m. start inside John M. Belk Arena. The team will donate the proceeds from the game to the Hurricane Fund UNICEF.
Quick Notes of the Team and the Season Ahead...
• The 2017-18 season will be the program's 39th as the Wildcats have collected 421 wins during the program's history.
• Head coach Gayle Coats Fulks enters her first year leading the program after serving as assistant coach the last five years at Wake Forest.
• Monday, Oct. 22, was Atlantic 10 Media Day and junior Justine Lyon was named to the preseason all-second team. For more details click here on A-10 Media Day.
• Lyon had a breakout sophomore season that saw her cap it off by being named the A-10 Most Improved Player.
• She paced the team with a 15.7 points-per-game average, which was an increase of 10 points per game from her freshman season.
• Lyon was even better in A-10 games, averaging 19.5, as both her season average and league average ranked third overall in the conference.
• Davidson is entering its fourth year in the Atlantic 10.
• Davidson went 6-23 overall last year and 4-12 in the A-10.
• The 'Cats return eight letterwinners, including four of its five starters.
• Davidson has reached postseason play three times, earning bids into the Women's NIT in 2007, 2012, 2013.
• Over the past 15 years, Davidson has won at least 15 games in nine of those seasons.
• Three of those seasons saw the Wildcats win 23, 22 and 22 games, respectively.
• Davidson returns two of its top three scorers from last year in Lyon and Mackenzie Latt (13.7 ppg and a team-best 7.4 rpg).
• Latt reached the 1,000-point career mark last year and sits in 11th place all-time with 1,143 points.
• The senior recorded a team-high six double-doubles
• She also ranks in top-15 all-time in points per game (9th, 13.1), field goals (8th, 497), field goal attempts (9th, 1,103), rebounds (9th, 638) and blocks (9th, 78).
• The Wildcats welcome five freshmen: Katie Turner (Reno, Nevada), Kelly Fitzgerald (Apex, N.C.), Sarah Donovan (London, Ontario, Canada), Saeeda Abdul-Aziz (Schenectady, N.Y.) and Alana Davidson (New Hope, Pa.).
• Davidson will play a 13-game non-conference schedule, while playing a 16-game schedule in the A-10.
Scouting JCSU...
• The Golden Bulls are coming off a 22-8 season with a 12-4 record in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA), winning the league tournament.
• They were picked as the top team in the CIAA as the league announced its preseason predictions, Oct. 4.
• JCSU also had two returning student-athletes earn preseason honors, with senior Blaire Thomas, last season's CIAA Tournament MVP, along with sophomore guard Malia Rivers.
• Last season, Thomas averaged 13.0 points per game, ranking ninth in the league, while Rivers averaged 7.4 points per game in her initial season with the Gold and Blue. She also shot 35.3% from the field and 32.4% from long range.
• Thomas paced the team in scoring 11 times a year ago.
• Johnson C. Smith's season ended last year in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Women's Basketball Atlantic Regional, a 59-55 defeat to Indiana (Pa.).
• Head coach Stephen Joyner, Jr., has been at the helm of the program since July 5, 2012.
• He has collected 81 wins while at JCSU and hs 116 overall in his seven years of coaching.
• The Golden Bulls were 10-3 at home last year and 7-4 on the road, with a 5-1 mark in neutral site games.

Davidson officially starts its season with a four-game road trip by playing at Western Carolina next Friday, Nov. 10.
