DAVIDSON, N.C. – Elon scored a goal in each half, including one from Jaiden Fortune with just over three minutes to play as the Phoenix edged Davidson, 2-1, in non-conference men's soccer action Tuesday at Alumni Stadium.
Avoiding its seventh overtime contest of the campaign, Elon improves to 6-4-6, while the 'Cats fall to 8-6-2 overall.
Trailing 1-0, Davidson freshman Jamie DiLuzio netted the equalizer and his first collegiate goal in the 75th minute off a centering pass from Hugh Chatham, who was named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week on Monday.
Despite the loss, the Wildcats finished with a 9-6 margin in shots.
Senior Cort Coxhead led the 'Cats with four shots, including a pair of chances on frame in the second half.
Ronni Mleczkovicz put the Phoenix on top 5:09 into the match with his third goal of the season.
Both starting keepers stopped a pair of shots while Sawyer Gaffney recorded one save in the final 45 minutes for Davidson.
Up Next
Davidson will conclude its regular season with a 7 p.m. "Senior Night" contest against league-foe La Salle on Wednesday, Nov. 1 at Alumni Stadium.
Postgame Comments from Head Coach Matt Spear
"We made seven changes to the starting line-up tonight following Saturday's win at Saint Louis to rest some very tired guys and to give some others a well-earned opportunity."
"Overall we played 19 guys tonight, and it was good to rotate more players in to action for this home non-conference match, which felt a bit different than the recent run of A-10 battles."
"I give Elon credit as they capitalized early to seize the lead. They are a tough team to break down, with a defense that had only allowed eight goals in the 15 games to date."
"But I thought we started to gain a foothold on the game in the latter stages of the first half and that carried over to a better second half."
"That momentum culminated with Jamie's first college goal on a cross from fellow freshman Hugh."
"We are really happy for Jamie because he's worked hard through an injury to be ready to contribute in match play."
"Unfortunately when we had the late turnover in midfield, they were able to transition well and get the winning goal. It seemed like the very start and the very end of the match we just were not at our needed best to win tonight."
"We now have a full week to get healthy and prepare for the final match and Senior Day."
