NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Fresh off scoring his first collegiate goal, Hugh Chatham of the Davidson men's soccer team has been named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week, as announced by the league office Monday.
A freshman from nearby Huntersville and product of Hough High School, Chatham netted a 96th minute golden-goal to lift the Wildcats over Saint Louis, 1-0, on Saturday evening.
"Hugh has grown through his freshman campaign and was primed and needed for an important impact," said head coach Matt Spear. "Like many teams at this crucial point of the season, injuries and fatigue require a deep, invested bench and for younger players to step up."
"At Saint Louis, Hugh entered the game at a crucial time and he lifted our energy, intensity, and execution. And to get a game-winner and one's first collegiate goal on the road at a talented conference opponent in a critical match in terms of standings is for lack of a better word awesome."
Davidson (8-5-2) returns home Tuesday evening for a 7 p.m. kickoff with former league-foe Elon at Alumni Stadium.
