DAVIDSON, N.C. -- As October winds down, Davidson baseball continues with its fall season, having just finished its first of two weekends with the Red and Black World Series. The teams, as divided and chosen by the this year's three captains- seniors Evan Roberts, Alec Acosta, and Andrew Born- saw underclassmen step up and positive production from multiple areas in the lineup, showing good signs of promise for the 2018 season.
The Black team was victorious on the first weekend, taking the final two games of the series.
In the opening contest, a five-run 7th inning powered the Red squad to a 9-2 victory, started by a long ball from transfer Walker Imwalle. Redshirt freshman Alex Mardiney recorded three RBI in the game, including a two-RBI double in that inning, while sophomore Zach Nussbaum posted a 2-for-4 day with two RBI.
The Red pitching staff allowed zero earned runs and combined for 11 strikeouts. Junior Allen Barry got the starting nod, going four innings and fanning seven. For the Black squad, sophomore Brett Centracchio led the bats, going 3-for-4.
In Game 2, senior hurler Josh Smutzer picked up the win for Black, going four innings and allowing zero earned runs. Black took the lead in the third thanks to RBI singles from Acosta and Centracchio, who then went on to blast a homer in the sixth to give them a 4-1 cushion. Centracchio turned in another 3-for-4 day, while Acosta added two hits. The Red offense was led by redshirt sophomore Greg Lowe, who doubled and scored.
The duo of relievers ZJ Zabinski and Austin Leonard looked sharped for Black. Zabinski threw two shutout frames following Smutzer, and Leonard sealed the win with a 1-2-3 ninth.
With the series even at 1-1, heroics in Game 3 delivered excitement for both squads before Black pulled away with the narrow 6-5 victory. Born led things off with a home run in the first, and freshman Ruben Fontes followed that up with a three-run blast in the fifth to put Black up 6-4. Their bullpen combined for four scoreless to keep the lead intact, with Zabinski again playing a big role. The southpaw entered in the ninth with two on and one out and pulled a strikeout and induced a groundout to earn the save.
Top performers on the weekend include Centracchio, who went 7-for-12 with three runs, three RBI, and a homer, and Born, who tallied five hits, scored three times, with a homer, double, and two RBI. He also recorded two outfield assists. Freshman Jake Biederman had strong showings from the 'pen, making two appearances where he struck out four over three innings.
The Red team will seek revenge this coming weekend, as the two squads will play another three-game series on Friday, Sunday, and Monday at Wilson Field.
