DAVIDSON, N.C. — Davidson nearly erased a 16-point deficit in the second half before the Richmond Spiders held on to claim a 62-51 decision Saturday afternoon in Atlantic 10 women's basketball action inside John M. Belk Arena.
The Wildcats got within two points twice in the final five minutes, but went just 2-for-9 from the field, with six of those misses coming from long range, the rest of the way and Richmond sealed the victory by going 11-for-15 at the charity stripe.
Junior Justine Lyon was the lone 'Cat to reach double digits in points, dropping in an even 20. She was a personal-best 7-for-8 from the free-throw line and tied her career high with five steals and added six rebounds.
Chloe Johnson scored nine points, dished out three assists and picked up two steals. Davidson's leading scorer Mackenzie Latt was held to eight points, eight below her season average.
Richmond (10-12, 4-5 A-10) had a pair of 20-point scorers led by Micaela Parson's 23 points to go with 12 rebounds. Janelle Hubbard added 21 points, hitting half of the Spiders' six three-pointers, and pocketed three steals.
Down by 16 (44-28) to start the fourth quarter, Davidson used a quick 9-2 run to cut its deficit to single digits. After Richmond hit a pair of free throws, the Wildcats continued their run with Latt canning a three-ball, and Johnson and Lyon following with a jumper and layup to make it 48-46 with 4:39 left.
Two free throws by Andrea Robinson a minute later brought Davidson (3-18, 1-8 A-10) back within two at 50-48. It would be as close as the 'Cats got though, as they were unable to get their shots to drop down the stretch.
Davidson had a tough first quarter, falling behind 16-4 before scoring 12 points in the second quarter and trailed 31-16 at halftime.
In the third quarter, the Wildcats used a 10-3 run to make it 36-26 before the Spiders finished the quarter on an 8-2 run.
Richmond went 21-for-32 from the charity stripe, while Davidson was 14-for-16. Both teams tied on the boards with 33 rebounds apiece, with the Wildcats hauling in a game-high 11 offensive rebounds. They also pocketed a game-high 11 steals.
