DAVIDSON, N.C. – A total of 23 Top-Three individual finishes paced the Davidson men's and women's swimming and diving teams on the opening night of action at the Davidson duals, where the Wildcats welcomed the squads from Gardner-Webb, Georgia Southern, and Liberty for a two-day event at Cannon Natatorium.
The Wildcat men lead Gardner-Webb 100.5-78.5, while the women are in front of both Gardner-Webb (110.5-66.5) and Georgia Southern (115-69), but trailed Liberty (105-74) at the conclusion of Friday's events.
The men registered two event sweeps, cleaning up both the 200 free and 200 fly events. Senior Spencer Davies registered the top prize in the 200 free (1:44.06), with junior Cole Riggan and freshman Ian Hentenaar clocking in right behind him at second and third, respectively. Freshman Griffen Younger (1:56.41) touched ahead of teammate Ryan Knohl in the 200 fly, while Hentenaar picked up another third.
Senior Chris Cardwell pulled off a thrilling race in the 50 free, where he came in a dead-even tie with Gardner-Webb's Zach Dingfield, both clocking in at 21.76. Freshman Crossan Cooper and sophomore Andrew Miller concluded the first-place finishes on the men's side, bringing in 'gold' in the 1,000 free (9:39.36) and one-meter diving events. Cooper also turned in two thirds (200 IM, 100 breast), and juniors Clay Resweber (1000 free, 100 back), Riley League (200 IM), and Taylor Willenbring (100 breast) joined sophomore Johnny Evans (1M diving) to cap off the men's scoring with second-place performances.
For the women, the veteran duo of Elise Lankiewicz and Katy Williams continued to produce. Lankiewicz recorded a first and second-place Friday, taking the top spot in the 200 free (1:50.69) and was narrowly edged out in the 100 back, with Williams cruised to victory in the 100 breast (1:05.95). They were joined in the scoring by classmate Erica Clancy in the 50 freestyle (2nd), junior Leah Hubert in the 1000 free (3rd), junior Hayley Atkins on three-meter diving (2nd) and freshman Isabella McElrath in the 200 fly (3rd).
The women's relays took a pair of Top-Three finishes, coming in third in the 200 medley and closely out-touched in the 400 free. The men collected four podium-worthy performances, taking second and third in both the 200 medley and 400 free relays.
