DAVIDSON, N.C. – 10 first place finishes highlighted Davidson's Saturday dual meet with Colonial Athletic Association power William & Mary. The Wildcats were trumped by the Tribe 164-124 on the women's side and fell 181-107 to the back-to-back CAA champions on the men's. It was also Senior Day as the nine veterans of DCSD were honored and recognized for their accomplishments both in the pool and classroom.
The 'Cats swept the diving events, as junior Hayley Atkins won both the one and three meter on the women's side, and sophomore Andrew Miller mirrored her on the men's. Atkins registered a new season-best in the one meter (252.40), while Miller bettered himself in both the one (221.70) and three (224.70).
Reigning Atlantic 10 Performer of the Week, senior Elise Lankiewicz, added two more wins to her already stellar trophy case, recording a top mark of 10:11.41 in the 1,000 freestyle and a time of 5:00.56 in the 500 free. She was joined on the women's side by classmate Katy Williams, who took first in the 200 breast (2:22.87), and the women's 400 free relay (seniors Erica Clancy and Kassie Shannon, sophomore Maggie Farrell, Lankiewicz), who clocked in more than five seconds ahead of their competition at 3:32.69.
Lankiewicz and Williams nearly went undefeated, each completing the day with a close, second-place performance. Lankiewicz was just a half-stroke behind in the 100 free (51.43), while Williams was bested by her younger sister Claire (swimming for the Tribe), who out-touched her in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.54).
The junior duo of Clay Resweber and Taylor Willenbring led the men's effort, each turning in a first place. Resweber nearly matched his season-best time, registering a clip of 1:41.59 in the 200 free, while Willenbring collected the top time in the 100 breast (58.53). They too nearly went undefeated individually; Resweber turned in a second in the 500 free (4:44.05) and Willenbring was just a stroke behind in the 100 free (46.93). They also garnered a second place in the 400 free relay, joined by freshman Brian Hynes and junior Ari Snyder (3:08.07).
The Wildcats recorded a total of 17 second-place performances, including two from sophomore Emily Yang on the women's side in the 200 fly and in a tight race in the 200 IM, and the diving duo of Christina Brown and Johnny Evans, who each turned in seconds in both the one and three meter events on the women's and men's side.
Davidson concludes its home schedule next weekend, welcoming Gardner-Webb, and the ladies of Liberty and Georgia Southern in a two-day event at Cannon Natatorium.
