DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson volleyball (2-5) remains at home this weekend, welcoming three teams for the annual Wildcat Classic at Belk Arena in Baker Sports Complex.
The 'Cats play host to Furman, USC Upstate, and Liberty, with each team playing three matches over the course of the two-day event (Friday, Sept. 9-Saturday Sept. 10). Davidson faces Furman at 7 p.m. Friday, and then takes on USC Upstate at noon and Liberty at 6 p.m. on Saturday.
Davidson Athletics will be sponsoring several promotions at the tournament; Friday will be Disney Night and fans are encouraged to dress like their favorite Disney characters for a chance to win a prize. Additionally, Princess Anna and Princess Elsa from Frozen will be on-hand and available for photo opportunities. If 1,000 fans attend Friday's match, one lucky fan can win $1,000. Other prizes include a free year's subscription of Netflix, and free pizza for the first 200 fans in attendance. LAST TIME OUT
The 'Cats dropped a 3-1 contest to Elon Tuesday in their 2016 home opener. Junior Kelly Friers had another double-digit kills performance, posting 12, with sophomore Ciera Cockrell right behind her at 11. Freshman libero Elise Edman recorded a career-high 21 digs.
SCOUTING THE PALADINS
Furman enters Friday with a 2-4 record, with wins coming against Auburn and Clemson. A trio of seniors lead the Paladins charge; outside hitter Annie Bierman tops the squad with 75 kills, averaging 3.12 per set, setter Ashton Stocker holds a team-high 189 assists and middle blocker Taina Joseph boasts 20 blocks, including four solos. Junior Meg DeMaar has collected 105 digs to round out the Furman stat sheet.
SCOUTING THE SPARTANS
USC Upstate (2-6) comes to Baker on a two-game win streak, sweeping both Hampton and Limestone. Senior Emily Koelling tops the team in two categories, with 59 kills and 24 blocks. Sophomore Madison Haake has 187 assists and a stellar 6.03 per set, while junior Kaleigh Kelley boasts 117 digs.
SCOUTING THE FLAMES
Like their opponents this weekend, Liberty, too, has just two wins on the young season, defeating USC Upstate in a 3-0 match earlier this season, and taking Hampton in straight sets. Freshman Leah Clayton appears off to a good start, recording a team-high 58 kills and ranks second on the squad with 56 digs. The Flames use two primary setters in junior Anna Willey (92 assists, 6.57 per set) and sophomore Hannah Morris (85 assists, 6.07 assists per set), and rely on junior Sirena Vorster (26 blocks) for her presence in the net.
THE SERIES BREAKDOWN
Davidson and Furman have faced each other more than any other opponent in Wildcat history, meeting for the 56th time on Friday. The teams last met as rivals of the Southern Conference in 2013, when the Paladins took the match in straight sets. The 'Cats and Spartans are more recently familiar, having played against each other a year ago as USC Upstate pulled off the sweep. Davidson and Liberty are meeting for the first time since 2006, when the 'Cats swept the Flames.
UP NEXT
The 'Cats will conclude their pre-conference schedule, traveling to Columbia, S.C., for the Gamecock Invitational on Sept. 16-17. Davidson will face South Carolina, Gardner-Webb, and William & Mary.
