DAVIDSON, N.C. – Dynamic performances in the third and fourth sets were not enough for the Wildcats Tuesday, as the volleyball team dropped a 3-1 match with Elon (18-25, 19-25, 25-18, 24-26) at Belk Arena.
Junior Kelly Friers led the offensive charge with 12 kills, followed closely by sophomore Ciera Cockrell who collected 11. Senior Emily Franklin added eight and was a major element on the blocking front for Davidson. Freshman libero Elise Edman recorded a career-high 21 digs, and sophomore Mason Rooney picked up nine kills at a .389 hitting efficiency to round out the Wildcat stat leaders.
The 'Cats started the battle right away, forcing nine ties in the opening stanza until the Phoenix took six straight points to secure Set One 25-18. Elon took advantage of a six-point lead in the second frame until Davidson threatened, registering four unanswered points on kills from Franklin and Cockrell and two Phoenix miscues. Elon then used two Wildcat mishaps to their advantage, taking the set 25-19.
The 'Cats came out clawing after the intermission, stealing the momentum at the 5-5 mark in the third set. A three-point rally (again courtesy of Franklin and Cockrell kills) started the trend, where Davidson remained in the lead for the remainder of the set.
The team added control coming out of an Elon-called timeout, where sophomore Sam Thompson pulled off Davidson's next two points on back-row kills and put the squad up 21-16. Friers followed suit, slamming two of the 'Cats final three points to avoid the sweep as they took the set 25-18.
Friers started right where she left off, picking up the first point of Set Four. The Phoenix fired back with force, taking seven points in a row and doubling off the Wildcats at 16-8. Davidson refused to go down without a fight, winning the next five of seven points and coming to within five at 18-13 and force an Elon timeout.
The 'Cats repeated the process, coming out of the break and taking six of the next eight, including four in a row. The Phoenix looked to be back in control after taking two of the next three and going up 22-18.
Enter Treadwell and Friers, who each turned in a kill and capitalized on a bad Elon set and put the 'Cats in dangerous territory at 23-21. After coming to match point off a kill from the contest's leader in Elon's Kam Terry, the 'Cats took three straight and equalized the match at 24-24 before falling 26-24.
Davidson remains at home this weekend, welcoming three other teams for the annual Wildcat Classic on Friday and Saturday in Belk Arena.
