2016 Home Video Preview
DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson volleyball (2-4) begins its 2016 home campaign Tuesday, welcoming in-state foe Elon (4-2) to Baker Sports Complex for a 7 p.m. showdown.
Davidson Athletics will be sponsoring a Freshman Hall Night, which will pit the first-year dormitories against one another. The Hall that brings the highest percentage of fans to Tuesday's tilt will win a pizza party with the volleyball team.
LAST TIME OUT
The Wildcats trumped tournament host Wake Forest 3-1 last weekend in Winston-Salem, but were swept on Saturday, dropping a five-set thriller with Loyola (Chicago) and fell 0-3 to College of Charleston. Sophomore Mason Rooney was selected to the Wake Forest Invitational All-Tournament Team, posting 21 kills, 51 assists, and 15 total blocks. Junior Kelly Friers recorded a career-high in the Loyola match, picking up 17 slams.
THE LEADERBOARD
Sophomore Sabrina Shepherd, the 2015 Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year, leads the squad with 41 kills on the year, while Rooney posts a team-high 95 assists, narrowly trumping senior captain Mikayla Derochie, with 91. Her classmate and co-captain, Emily Franklin, boasts a team-high 29 total blocks, including seven solo. Freshman defensive specialist Elise Edman has made quite an impact in the early stages of the 2016 slate, posting 66 digs.
SCOUTING THE PHOENIX
Elon is coming off two wins at the Tussle of the Triad tournament, downing Youngstown State and UNCG but dropping a contest to High Point. Sophomore Kam Terry leads the squad with 91 kills in the young season, averaging 3.64 kills per set. Junior Sydel Curry leads the team with 180 assists, while senior Kayla Agae proves to be a threat from the line, boasting a team-high 12 service aces. Veteran Ally Karie tops the team defensively, with five solo blocks and 30 total.
HELLO ELON, MY OLD FRIEND
The 'Cats hold a narrow edge over the Phoenix 11-10 as the teams square off for their 22nd all-time meeting. Elon has taken the last four matches against Davidson, but the Wildcats post a stellar .549 winning percentage at home, and only dropped three matches in Baker a year ago.
UP NEXT
Davidson remains at home, welcoming three teams for the Wildcat Classic on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 9-10. The 'Cats will host USC Upstate, Liberty, and Furman.
