CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Davidson men's and women's swimming and diving began their 2016-17 campaigns Friday, competing in a multi-team event at Queens University in Uptown Charlotte. The 'Cats faced three teams on the women's side (Queens, league foe George Washington, UNC Asheville) and two on the men's side (Queens, GW).
The women wasted no time impressing, turning in five overall Top-Three finishes and placing in the Top-Eight in every event. Senior standout Elise Lankiewicz, two-time defending Atlantic 10 Most Outstanding Performer, picked up right where she left off last March, winning the 200 yard freestyle event in a time of 1:50.47. The veteran also anchored both the 400 medley and 800 free relays that each placed second.
Fellow senior Katy Williams was narrowly edged out in the 100 breast, taking second (1:06.11), and junior Emily Yang recorded a 2:11.77 clip en route to third place in the 200 individual medley.
Joining Williams (breast) and Lankiewicz (free) in the 400 medley relay was a pair of sophomores in Anabelle Durham (backstroke) and Maggie Farrell (butterfly) for an overall time of 3:52.29. Farrell and Lankiewicz teamed up once again in the 800 free relay (7:45.77), joined this time by junior Elizabeth Weldon, who led off, and senior Kassie Shannon, who swam second.
The men's fleet was led by a dominating performance from freshman Crossan Cooper, who started his collegiate career in dynamic fashion, winning the 1000 yard freestyle at a mark of 9:36.33 (five seconds faster than the next finisher), ranking him seventh on the Top Ten Performers List.
Three other Top-Three placements highlighted Day One for the men, as junior Clay Resweber took second in the 200 free (1:42.30), classmate Riley League touched in at 1:55.97 for third in the 200 IM, and the quartet of Cooper, Resweber, junior Cole Riggan, and freshman Brian Hynes combined for a 7:01.55 time in the 800 free relay. Despite turning in a mark six seconds faster than the pool record, the group took second after the Queens relay shredded the record at 6:53.07.
Another notable performer for the men was senior Chris Cardwell, whose time of 21.51 was just tenths of a second off his personal-best in the 50 free as he took fourth overall. The men also placed at least one member in the Top-Eight in each event.
All four squads will return to the water Saturday at 11 a.m. at Cannon Natatorium at Davidson to conclude the two-day event.
