DAVIDSON, N.C. — The start of the Davidson women's basketball season begins Monday, Oct. 3 in the afternoon when the Wildcats open with their first official practice at John M. Belk Arena for the 2016-17 campaign.
Entering their seventh season under the guidance of Michele Savage, Davidson is starting its third year in the Atlantic 10.
"I'm excited to get started with official practice on Saturday," said Savage, who has collected 90 career wins in six years. "I am looking forward to getting the season going and have the whole team together everyday as we enter our third year in Atlantic 10. Our individual workouts have been great and I'm excited to see our two freshmen grow and help the returners in making this a great season."
A few quick notes about the team and the season ahead...
• The 2016-17 season will be the program's 38th.
• Davidson will be looking to improve on last year's 11-19 overall record as it enters its third year in the A-10 after going 5-11 in league play.
• The 'Cats won the UNCW Thanksgiving Tournament last year by downing Bowling Green and host UNC Wilmington, giving the program its seventh in-season tournament title since 1992-93 and its first in three tries at the Seahawks' Thanksgiving Tournament.
• Davidson has reached postseason play three times, earning bids into the Women's NIT in 2007, 2012, 2013.
• Over the past 14 years, Davidson has won at least 15 games in nine of those seasons.
• Three of those seasons saw the Wildcats win 23, 22 and 22 games, respectively, with both 22-win campaigns coming under Savage in back-to-back seasons.
Roster Breakdown...
• Davidson returns eight letterwinners and three of its five starters from a year ago.
• The Wildcats welcome two freshmen: Andrea Robinson (Randallstown, Md.) and Ally Welling (The Woodlands, Texas).
• Overall, the 2016-17 roster will feature three seniors, three juniors, three sophomores and two freshmen.
Schedule...
Entering its third year in the A-10, Davidson will face each of the 13 conference opponents during the 16-game league schedule that features eight home and eight away games. The Wildcats open A-10 play at home on New Year's Eve against Saint Louis, the only time they will play the Billikens this year after facing them twice each over the past two seasons. Starting the new calendar year will be trips to Fordham and Duquesne, Jan. 4 & 7. Davidson split its two games last year with the Rams, netting a 69-51 win at home.
Highlighting this year's 2016-17 non-conference games is a trip to East Lansing, Mich., to face Big Ten-foe Michigan State and a Thanksgiving trip to Cancun, Mexico to play in the Cancun Challenge where the Wildcats will take on Toledo and Idaho State for the first time in program history. The 'Cats will also play cross-county rival Charlotte.
