DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson men's tennis team gears up for its Fall season this weekend when they play host to the Davidson Invitational, Sept. 30-Oct. 2, on the hardcourts of the Davidson Tennis Courts.
This will be the 10th straight year the Wildcats will host their own invitational. Joining them at the invitational this weekend will be USC-Upstate, UNC Asheville, Campbell, Gardner-Webb and Queens from just down the road in Charlotte. The invitational is a points system, with points being determined based on position. The No. 1 singles position is worth 16 points and going two points down at each position to No. 8, which is worth two points. The top doubles spot is worth eight points, then going down to No. 4, which is worth two.
"I'm looking forward to this weekend and our first home event of the Fall," said head coach Drew Barrett, who is entering his 11th season. "We have a very talented and young group returning from last season and they are ready to hit the courts and show what they can do. It should be a great tournament with the teams we are bring in for the weekend."
Play begins Friday, Sept. 26, at 3 p.m. with singles-doubles-singles being played in that order and runs until 6 p.m. Saturday's play begins at 9 a.m. and runs until 4 p.m., and the invitational wraps up on Sunday starting at 10 a.m. and running until 2 p.m. The invite itself will be a flighted individual format with eight singles flights and four doubles flights.
Davidson's Fall season this year will have it playing in three other tournaments. After this weekend, the Wildcats will play at the USTA/ITA Regional Championship in Cary, N.C., Oct. 14-16. They follow up with a trip down to Rock Hill, S.C., to play in the Winthrop Invitational, Oct. 28-29, and finish out the Fall season at the Wake Forest Invitational, Nov. 11-13.
Returning from last season is eight letterwinners, including all six starters led by A-10 all-conference performers Shamael Chaudhry and Artem Khrapko. The duo helped the Wildcats to another double-digit winning season, finishing at 11-10 overall and 4-1 in league play. They combined for 20 wins in singles at the top two positions, while adding another 16 victories in doubles matches.
