DAVIDSON, N.C. — Davidson men's tennis assistant coach Alex Kasarov was recently named the head men's tennis coach at Monmouth University in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, as announced by the school.
Kasarov becomes the fourth Wildcat assistant under head coach Drew Barrett to go on and become a head coach. He joins Billy Boykin (Queens University's men's and women's head coach), Ben Johnson (Richmond) and Ricardo Gonzalez (Florida Atlantic) who have earned head coaching positions for men's tennis programs.
During his two years at Davidson, Kasarov helped the program transition from the Southern Conference to the Atlantic 10. The Wildcats hit double digits in the win column in both 2015 and 2016, collecting 12 and 11, respectively. They had a combined 8-2 league mark, going 4-1 each season. In addition, Kasarov coached two-time A-10 all-league picks Shamael Chaudhry and Artem Khrapko, who in their first two years have combined to collect 47 singles wins and 31 doubles victories.
Kasarov is taking over a Monmouth program that reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time last year, winning the MAAC Championship Title. The Hawks completed an improbable run in the final, coming back from down 3-0 to defeat Quinnipiac, 4-3. They won a share of the MAAC Regular Season Title for the second-straight season, finishing the year with a 12-10 overall record after falling to No. 1 Virginia in the NCAA Tournament's first round.
Davidson begins its 2016 Fall slate of tournaments by hosting the Davidson Invitational next weekend, Sept. 30-Oct. 2.
