CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Davidson women's cross country team opened the 2016 campaign Friday at the Charlotte Preview Meet with a second place finish.
Davidson was paced by junior Sarah Sears' fourth place result. The Arlington, Va., native traversed the 5k course in 18:27.9. Sears paced a pair of freshmen teammates as Madison Hunter and Susannah Cate placed fifth and sixth, respectively. Hunter crossed the line in 18:28.6, while Cate was just behind in 18:29.4.
Head Coach Jen Straub thought the women showed grit despite the poor course conditions from a rainy day.
"I was pleased with the way the girls performed this afternoon! The wind and rain made the course drag a bit, but they stepped up and competed against a very talented UNCC team," said Straub.
Senior Caroline Turner put in a strong effort as the fourth 'Cat to score and did so in 12th overall, breaking the 19 minute mark with a time of 18:54.8. Freshman Paige McKinney was the final scorer for Straub's squad, registering a 15th place finish in 19:00.6.
The 'Cats return to the start line Saturday, Sept. 17 at the Commodore Classic hosted by Vanderbilt University.
