WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Davidson volleyball downed Wake Forest 3-1 Friday by scores of 25-19, 25-16, 19-25, 26-24 at the Wake Forest Invitational in Winston-Salem. The Wildcats have now won six of their last seven sets, dating back to last Sunday with their sweep of UNCW in Wilmington, N.C.
Sophomore Mason Rooney led the scoring effort with 11 kills, with junior Kelly Friers returning to the court in strong fashion, adding 10 of her own. Rooney turned in an impressive .409 hitting efficiency and also added 17 assists across the four sets. Senior captain Mikayla Derochie performed with at a stellar .727 clip, posting seven kills and adding 18 assists. Freshman Elise Edman had an impressive outing, recording 18 digs.
"The team committed to playing hard regardless of the score," head coach Chris Willis said. "That commitment got us through the loss of the third set and being down 18-22 in the fourth. They had great determination and focus on the game plan. I'm very proud of the team's performance tonight."
The 'Cats worked quickly in the opening frame, taking an early five-point lead at 8-3 before the Demon Deacons called a timeout. The break was ineffective, as Davidson increased its lead to seven and continued to capitalize on Wake miscues.
The set remained in the Wildcats favor, maintaining at least a five-point command the remainder of the frame until Rooney sealed the 25-19 win with a service ace.
Davidson continued to dominate in Set 2, exploding from a narrow three-point lead to take eight of the next ten points and go on to finalize the frame at 25-16.
As lopsided as the first two were, the last two sets following intermission were neck-and-neck back-and-forth battles.
With the score knotted up at 19 all (the last of ten ties in the frame), Wake used one Davidson error and five straight kills to spoil the sweep and take the third set 19-25.
The momentum seemed to stay in the Demon Deacons' favor when they held a four-point advantage in set four, before the 'Cats responded with five unanswered points to take the 24-23 lead. After Wake collected a kill to tie the game once more, enter Rooney, who slammed a big-time kill for the set point, before a service ace from senior Emily Franklin secured the set and match at 26-24.
Davidson returns to action Saturday, facing Loyola-Chicago and College of Charleston.
