DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson men's and women's swimming and diving teams unveiled their 2016-17 schedule as announced by head coach John Young Tuesday afternoon. The slate includes seven events, including four home meets, before the squads embark on their third Atlantic 10 Championships.
"I'm pleased with the composition of this year's schedule," Young said. "We've got outstanding racing opportunities, highlighted by A-10 peers and rivals from days gone by, balanced with training blocks that will make or break our season. Including the twice-defending Division II champs in our opening weekend, with a fun chance to race in two pools, will help us to consider what the long road ahead looks like. Before we know it, we'll be back in Ohio hoping to keep up with a fast improving Atlantic 10."
The teams begin their campaign uptown as Queens welcomes the 'Cats, league foe George Washington, and UNC Asheville on the women's side in Charlotte Friday, Sept. 30. The four will face off again the following day, this time in Davidson at Cannon Natatorium, Oct. 1.
The Wildcats then travel to Richmond, Va., for the third straight year, where they will face a combination of A-10 foes in Richmond, George Mason, or Duquesne, Oct. 21-22.
Davidson will have its first dual meet Oct. 29 in Washington, D.C., meeting Georgetown, also for the third consecutive season.
As they have every season since at least 2007, the Wildcats will travel to Gambier, Ohio, for the Kenyon Invitational, Nov. 30-Dec.2. In addition to Division III powerhouse Kenyon, the 'Cats will face John Hopkins and the University of Pennsylvania, among others.
Following two straight home dual meets against UNCW (Jan. 14) and William & Mary (Jan. 21), Davidson remains at Cannon, welcoming Gardner-Webb for both squads, as well as Liberty and Georgia Southern on the women's side for a two-day event on Jan. 27-28 that will serve as the final tune-up before the A-10 Championships.
Held in Geneva, Ohio, the Atlantic 10 Championship will last from Feb. 15-18 as both fleets look to improve on impressive 2015-16 seasons, where they tallied eight gold medals, five A-10 records and 10 school records during last year's championship.
