DAVIDSON, N.C. – Sophomore Kristin Kisa netted her first career goal, but Davidson field hockey was unable to overcome an early deficit and dropped its opening matchup to visiting Georgetown, 3-1, Friday at Belk Turf Field.
Despite the loss, the Wildcats tripled the Hoyas in shots, 17-5, and more than doubled them in penalty corners, 11-5. Georgetown improves to 1-0- its first season-opening win since 2012- while Davidson slips to 0-1. Senior captain Katherine English and classmate Becca Jones led the shooting effort, each chiseling four shots apiece- Jones with three on-target, English with two.
"It's frustrating to take a loss because we outshot them and dominated about 85% of the game," head coach Ginny Turner said. "At the same time, I think we're very encouraged with the team effort and our overall play; there was a lot of great decision making that happened on the field, and I think it was a great start to build on as the season progresses."
An early shot off a corner less than three minutes into the contest gave Georgetown the early 1-0 advantage, who added insurance with a second goal fifteen minutes later from a ball shot off the right side of the circle.
Kisa then responded, receiving the ball from senior captain Anne Federico from the left side of the field, and softly tapped it in.
English scored what would have been the equalizer, finding the back of the cage off a deflected ball late in the first half, but the shot was ruled no-good and left the 'Cats down 2-1 heading into intermission.
Davidson dominated the second half, taking 10 corners and maintaining possession nearly all of the period. With just two minutes remaining, the Hoyas capitalized on a penalty stroke to record what was ultimately the final goal and go up 3-1.
Sophomore keeper Bean Rodriguez picked up a save in her first career start, while veteran Rachel Skonecki recorded nine for Georgetown.
The Wildcats return to action, welcoming Ball State to Belk Turf Field for a Sunday showdown at 1 p.m.
