DAVIDSON, N.C. – After being selected to finish fourth in the Atlantic 10 Preseason Coaches' Poll earlier this week, Davidson field hockey begins its 2016 campaign on familiar ground, welcoming three teams to Belk Turf Field for a three-game homestand.
For the fifth time in six seasons, Davidson opens the season facing Georgetown, welcoming the Hoyas on Friday, Aug. 26, before completing the weekend with Ball State (Sunday, Aug. 28) and LIU Brooklyn (Saturday, Sept. 3). 2016 marks the first season of Division I action for the Blackbirds.
Fans can follow all the action via the streaming and live stat links provided, as well as the @DCFH Twitter account.
2016 AT A GLANCE
Coming off their first Atlantic 10 Tournament bid last season, the Wildcats prepare for their third year in conference with 2015 A-10 Coach of the Year Ginny Turner returning for her tenth year at the helm. Senior co-captains Katherine English, a 2015 A-10 All-Tournament Team selection, and Anne Federico, a 2015 A-10 Player of the Week, lead a large veteran contingency.
Joining Federico and English are classmates Lauren McFayden and Becca Jones, the 'Cats top returning points leader (9), as well as seven juniors and six sophomores to provide experience and depth.
ON THE SIDELINES
Turner, who enters Friday with a 5-4 record in Opening Day matchups, has mentored five A-10 All-Conference selections, six NorPac Players of the Year, 18 All-NorPac East honorees and three NFHCA All-Region Team recipients.
Joining her this season is first-year assistant Caitlin Walsh, who joined the program last April after a solid career at Old Dominion in Norfolk, Va. DCFH alum Sarah Fisher, who played for Turner from 2009-2012 and garnered All-NorPac recognition during her senior season, will work primarily with the goalkeepers.
THE SIX PLUS CLUB; THE BACKFIELD BRIGADE
In addition to Jones' nine points (3g-3a), the Wildcats bring back four members with six points or more from last season. English ranks second among returners with seven, followed by Federico and juniors Paige Albert and Hannah Fisher, each with six.
Davidson also returns a strong backfield, with a trio of juniors in Lauren Gampper, Morgan French, and Anna Brewer all starting every game last season.
THE SCHEDULE
The 'Cats play a program-high 11 home games this year, including a Tuesday night tilt with 2015 NCAA runner-up UNC. Four conference matches also highlight the home slate, while Davidson faces tough competition on the road in 2015 NCAA Participant Wake Forest, 2015 A-10 regular season champs Richmond, and A-10 Tournament Champs UMass.
