SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. – Former Davidson men's golf standout David Sargent suffered a 1 up setback to William Rainey in the final match of the 7th Annual North Carolina Amateur Match Play Championship at Mid Pines Inn & Golf Club Sunday morning.
"It was probably the most fun tournament I've ever played," said Sargent. "I was hitting it really well and was in a good groove for most of it. I'm good friends with Will, so the whole final match was a lot of fun. He's a great player, so I'm definitely not hanging my head shooting two-under and losing 1 up."
A native of nearby Cornelius, Sargent advanced to the finals with wins over Patrick Langdon (3 and 2), Stephen Saleeby (4 and 2), Caleb Keck (2 and 1) and Walker Simas (6 and 5).
In Sunday morning's final, Sargent raced out to a 3 up advantage after four holes before Rainey battled back and claimed the title with a birdie on the Par 4, 411-yard 18th hole.
Sargent, a two-time all-conference performer for the Wildcats, qualified for the match play competition after tying for fifth in the stroke play portion with a 36-hole total of 141 (73-68).
