DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson women's tennis team was recently honored for their excellence in the classroom by earning Intercollegiate Tennis Association's 2016 All-Academic Team, while three Wildcats were named Scholar Athletes by the association.
The trio of recent grad Elaina Cummer, and rising juniors Ally Sexton and Ava Todd were each named scholar athletes. This was Cummer's third time earning ITA Scholar Athlete, joining Brites Moniz-Soares and Nisha Crouser to earn the honor at least three times during their careers.
It was the third time in the past four years overall Davidson as a team earned all-academic team honors, while it's the fifth time in the past six seasons at least one player earned ITA Scholar Athlete honors. The ITA All-Academic awards date back to 2002.
Coming off an outstanding 18-5 season, which saw it reach the Atlantic 10 Championship final, Davidson as a team sported a 3.25 grade point average for the year. The Wildcats were one of nine A-10 schools to earn ITA team academic honors.
Cummer finished her Wildcat career both excelling on the court as well as in the classroom. The Plano, Texas, native capped off a stellar four-year career by going a personal and team-best 15-5 in singles matches and added another 10 wins in doubles action, second most on the team. A second-team A-10 pick a year ago as well as a former 2013 Southern Conference All-Freshman Team member, Cummer finished her career with 84 combined wins in singles and doubles, registering 42 each in both categories.
She also excelled in the classroom, sporting over a 3.5 grade point average while majoring in biology. Cummer twice was named to the A-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll and earned a spot on the A-10 Women's Tennis All-Academic Team this past season.
A doubles specialist this past season, Sexton teamed with Anna Catharine Feaster to go a team-best 13-5 in doubles and a perfect 6-0 in A-10 play. She is now 30-11 overall in her two years in doubles action. Sexton is a three-time A-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll honoree and is majoring in environmental studies.
A year after going a team-best 19-3 in singles and being named to the A-10 All-Second Team, Todd was impressive again in her second year. The sophomore, who was named to the league's first team this past season, won 12 of her 14 matches at No. 2 and went a perfect 5-0 in A-10 matches. Todd ran off a team-high six-match win streak during the season after rattling off a 16-match streak as a freshman last year. She earned her fifth career weekly award by picking up one of Davidson's five player of the week honors this year.
Todd, who has a 33-9 singles record in two years, ended her sophomore season majoring in religion. She is a four-time A-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll honoree.
