DAVIDSON, N.C. – The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) has named Davidson as one of 764 teams to earn the Team Academic Award for the 2015-16 season, its highest total in history. Additionally, the Wildcats were one of just 20 Division I programs to earn the award and meet its Dig Pink fundraising goals, the AVCA added.
The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.
"Our staff and players recognize that volleyball is simply the icing on the cake of the student-athlete experience," head coach Chris Willis said. "Enhanced academic opportunities are the reasons our girls are attracted to Davidson College and they serve as the launching pad for our players future successes. The rigor of their coursework makes this recognition even more rewarding. I'm grateful to the AVCA for publicizing the accomplishments of our student-athletes in the classroom."
Davidson is the lone Atlantic 10 member to be recognized for its Dig Pink success, and one of three to earn the Team Academic Award (George Washington, La Salle).
Dig Pink, sponsored by the Side-Out Foundation, is a yearly event where volleyball teams across the nation work to raise funds for breast cancer research and spread awareness of the disease. Teams spend the entire month of October raising funds for the cause.
The 'Cats begin their 2016 campaign on August 27, facing Jacksonville in the UNCW Courtyard by Marriott Classic in Wilmington, N.C.
