DAVIDSON, N.C. — Rising junior Artem Khrapko has carried his successful sophomore season this past year into the summer, earning a wild card spot into the Levene Gouldin & Thompson Tennis Challenger in Binghamton, N.Y., July 16-24.
The LGT Challenger is nines days of USTA Men's Pro Circuit tennis, a few weeks prior to the U.S. Open. Over the years, it has proven to be a great stage for professionals from all over the world getting tuned up for the U.S. Open.
Khrapko, a native of Corning, N.Y., took part in a wild card tournament earlier this month, which awarded qualifying draw spots to the singles and doubles champions into the LGT Challenger. The rising junior defeated Mark Oljaca in the 32-player clay-court singles tournament at the Binghamton Tennis Center. Khrapko was one-half of the winning team for last year's wild card into the doubles tournament.
If he wins one match at the LGT Challenger, Khrapko will earn ATP points toward his world ranking.
Following up his solid freshman debut season in 2015, Khrapko enjoyed a nice second year by going 11-6 in singles action this past Spring season. All 11 wins came at the No. 2 position and he finished with a 4-1 record in league matches. Twice he ran off three-match winning streaks and finished the year strong, winning six of his last nine matches. With his 11 wins, Khrapko has won 26 matches in his first two seasons.
In doubles play, Khrapko went 8-7 on the year, teaming up mainly with Zack Zapatero at No. 3 to go 6-6. He played once with Chaudhry in an A-10 match vs. George Mason and they earned a 6-3 decision at No. 1. The sophomore ended the year well in doubles action as well, taking home wins in four of his last six matches.
