DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson swimming and diving's Luke Burton and Katy Williams will represent the Wildcats in the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials, set to take place June 26-July 3 in Omaha, Neb. Each will compete in two events.
Both swimmers will kick things off on Monday, with Burton competing in the 100m backstroke at 12:43 p.m. (ET) and Williams in the 100m breaststroke at 12:15 p.m. (ET). Burton will swim again Friday, this time in the 50m freestyle (11:00 a.m. ET), while Williams will conclude her Trials with the 200m breast (12:06 p.m. ET) on Thursday.
"Katy and Luke have each given their teammates, coaches, and the Davidson community a lot to celebrate during their time as Wildcats," Young said. "Qualifying for the US Olympic Team Trials, with a chance to represent Team USA at the Olympic Games, is a capstone accomplishment for the best athletes in our sport. I am proud of their accomplishments and appreciative of the leadership role that they've each embraced for our program."
Burton, a Kennesaw, Ga., native, qualified for the 50 free while participating in a meet in California last summer, and then added his second event this past February at a time trials meet in Virginia.
Williams, a rising senior from Apex, N.C., posted both of her qualifying times last July at the 2015 North Carolina Long Course Championships.
"It is a fantastic, super fast meet," Burton said. "There is such a high level of competition; sometimes this meet can be faster than the actual Olympics, because there are so many good swimmers in our country. The best way I can describe the difference is that a college meet is usually just family and friends, and the Trials is like the Super Bowl."
"It's always been a goal of mine to make Olympic Trials," Williams said. "When I touched the wall and looked up, that was so exciting. I was like 'hey, that's pretty fast'. It's a really cool atmosphere to be in, and there's so much pride and enthusiasm because everyone is just so happy to be there."
Former Davidson standouts Drew Onken '13 and Geoffrey Peitz '12 represented the Wildcats in the previous Olympic Trials.
Events begin each day at 10 a.m. CDT, and will be shown via live stream on nbcsports.com. The trials will also be aired on NBC and NBC Sports each night beginning at 6 p.m. EDT. A complete television schedule can be found here.
