FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Tournament officials for the 2016 Women's Cancun Challenge announced Monday the schedule for the 10-team field, as the Davidson women's basketball team learned the dates and times they will play. The Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya just south of Cancun, Mexico will once again play host to this spectacular event, slated for Nov. 24-26.
The four-team field of the Mayan Division features Northeastern (Colonial), Stanford (Pac-12), Purdue (Big Ten), and Wichita State (Missouri Valley). Teams will battle in a round-robin format, playing the other three teams across the Thanksgiving Holiday break. Davidson (Atlantic 10), Idaho State (Big Sky), Iowa (Big Ten), James Madison (Colonial), Toledo (Mid-American), and UCLA (Pac-12) make up the Riviera Division. Each of those teams will play two games at the Cancun Challenge.
The Wildcats will face off against Toledo Thursday, Nov. 24, at 4 p.m. (ET) and then take on Idaho State the following day on Friday at 4 p.m. as well. This will be the 'Cats first destination in-season tournament. They are 29-36 during tournaments that fall in the season since the program was restarted in 1992-93. Davidson has collected seven in-season tournament titles during that time, including this past year's UNCW Hampton Inn Thanksgiving Tournament on the campus of UNC Wilmington.
Rated as a top-five tournament in 2014 by Sports Illustrated, it's no wonder teams are jumping at the chance to return to the Yucatan. In the 12th installment of the Women's Cancun Challenge, the Hawkeyes will be flying south for the fourth time this November and looking to improve on their 6-1 all-time record at the event. Joining Iowa in returning to the Cancun Challenge is JMU. The Dukes bring in a 4-3 record and are back for the fourth time.
Three other schools in the field are making repeat trips. Idaho State (2011), Purdue (2011), and Wichita State (2012) are all heading back to the tournament.
