NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — After leading the Davidson women's tennis team to the A-10 Championship match in just their second season in the conference, head coach Sara Anundsen was honored by her peers by earning A-10 Coach of the Year, as the league office announced its all-conference and academic teams Tuesday.
In addition, the quartet of Anna Catharine Feaster, Ava Todd, Gabrielle Centenari and Elaina Cummer were also honored by the A-10. Feaster and Todd were named to the league's first team, freshman Centenari earned a spot on the second team and Cummer represented the Wildcats on the all-academic team, the first for the program.
Under the guidance of Anundsen, Davidson finished the season with an outstanding 18-5 overall record, going a perfect 6-0 in A-10 matches and reaching the league's championship match for the first time before falling to VCU. The 18-win campaign was the most victories for the program since a 19-win season in 2008, which happened to be the last time they also reached a conference tournament final when they were members of the Southern Conference.
Anundsen also led the Wildcats to an 11-match win streak during the season, which was one away from tying the second longest in program history of 12 in 2005.
Leading the way for the 'Cats was the senior Cummer. She capped off a stellar four-year career by going a personal and team-best 15-5 in singles matches (11-4 at No. 5) and added another 10 wins in doubles action, second most on the team. An A-10 second-team pick a year ago as well as a former 2013 Southern Conference All-Freshman Team member, Cummer finished her career with 84 combined wins in singles and doubles, registering 42 each in both categories.
The Plano, Texas, native also excelled in the classroom, sporting a 3.63 grade point average while majoring in biology. Cummer twice has been named to the A-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll.
The sophomore duo of Feaster and Todd picked up right where they left off after standout first years, both going 14-6 in singles play at No. 1 and 2 positions, respectively. Feaster, who was a first-team member last year, twice was picked the A-10 Player of the Week on back-to-back weeks in March. In just two seasons, the Knoxville, Tenn., native has collected 30 singles wins. Feaster also teamed up with Ally Sexton this year at No. 1 doubles to go a team-best 13-5, including 6-0 in A-10 matches. The pair is 30-10 in their two years together.
A year after going a team-best 19-3 in singles and being named to A-10 All-Second Team, Todd was impressive again in her second year. The sophomore won 12 of her 14 matches at No. 2 and went a perfect 5-0 in A-10 matches. Todd ran off a team-high six-match win streak during the season after rattling off a 16-match streak as a freshman last year. She earned her fifth career weekly award by picking up one of Davidson's five player of the week honors this year.
Having a great debut season for the Wildcats was Centenari, who stepped right into the starting lineup along with fellow classmate Megan Scholvinck. The first-year player started out as the 'Cats' No. 4 singles player and by the end of the season had moved up to No. 2 in her last six matches. Centenari was third on the team with a 13-7 record, including matching Todd with a perfect 5-0 mark in A-10 matches.
Centenari won her first career A-10 weekly award when she was named the league's rookie of the week, Feb. 23. The freshman had a season-high five-match win streak on the year, tying for the second highest on the team.
Joining Anundsen for the other two major award winners was Aspen Cervin of Saint Louis, who earned A-10 Most Outstanding Performer. Anna Rasmussen from VCU was given the A-10 Most Outstanding Rookie Performer.
Davidson, which had five players reach double figures in singles wins, concluded the year as a team with a 79-40 singles record, while going 33-28 in doubles matches.
